Understanding Your Pain

Why Back Pain Happens — and Why It Keeps Coming Back

Back pain rarely appears out of nowhere. Whether it started after lifting something heavy, sitting at a desk for years, or following an accident — the pain is almost always a signal that something in your spine has shifted out of its optimal position.

When the vertebrae of your lower spine misalign, they create pressure on the surrounding nerves, discs, and joints. Over time, this leads to inflammation, stiffness, muscle guarding, and the deep, persistent ache that makes everyday activities feel impossible.

The most common mistake is treating only the pain — with medication, heat, or generic exercises — without ever correcting the underlying misalignment. That's why back pain often returns, even after months of treatment elsewhere.

  • Dull, aching lower back pain that worsens after sitting or standing for long periods

  • Sharp or shooting pain that radiates into the buttocks or legs

  • Stiffness and limited range of motion — difficulty bending, twisting, or standing up straight

  • Pain that's worse in the morning or after periods of rest

  • Muscle spasms in the lower back, hips, or glutes

The Gonstead Difference

How We Treat Back Pain in Burnaby

At Adapt Spine Centre, we use the Gonstead System — one of the most specific and comprehensive chiropractic methods in the world — to precisely locate and correct the vertebral misalignments causing your back pain.

Precise Analysis First

We don't guess. Your initial exam includes X-rays, neurological scans, infrared thermal imaging, and hands-on palpation to identify exactly which vertebrae are misaligned and in which direction.

Specific Adjustments Only

Gonstead adjustments target only the problem areas — leaving healthy segments untouched. This precision means faster results and no unnecessary manipulation of areas that don't need it.

Tracked Progress

We re-scan and re-examine throughout your care plan so you can see objective improvements in your spine — not just feel them. We measure so you know the care is working.

Common Questions

Back Pain FAQs

How do I know if chiropractic care is right for my back pain?

Chiropractic care is most effective for back pain caused by spinal misalignment, disc pressure, muscle tension, and nerve irritation — which covers the vast majority of back pain cases. During your initial exam, we'll identify whether your condition is suited to Gonstead care and be transparent with you if we believe another specialist would serve you better.

How many sessions will it take before my back feels better?

Most patients begin noticing relief within the first 3–5 visits, though this varies depending on the severity and duration of your condition. After your initial exam, we'll provide a clear, personalized care plan so you know exactly what to expect and how long your recovery is projected to take.

Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a chiropractor in Burnaby?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. We welcome walk-ins and new patients from across Burnaby, North Burnaby, Burnaby Heights, and surrounding areas.

Is my back pain treatment covered by extended health benefits?

Chiropractic care is covered under most extended health benefit plans in BC. We'll provide a detailed receipt after each visit that you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement. We do not direct-bill at this time.
