Understanding Disc Problems
What Actually Happens When a Disc Herniates
The intervertebral discs are the shock-absorbing cushions between each vertebra of your spine. Each disc has a tough outer ring (annulus fibrosus) and a soft, gel-like centre (nucleus pulposus). When a vertebra becomes misaligned — whether from an injury, repetitive stress, or gradual postural breakdown — it creates uneven pressure on the adjacent disc.
Over time, this unequal loading causes the outer ring to weaken. The disc may bulge outward (a disc bulge), or the inner material may break through the outer wall (a herniation). If this displaced disc material contacts a nerve root, the result is sharp pain, radiating symptoms, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs.
The Gonstead approach to disc problems is based on a structural engineering model of the spine: correct the vertebral misalignment creating the uneven disc loading, and the disc has the best possible environment to heal.
Severe local pain at the site of the herniation — often sharp and sudden
Radiating arm or leg pain following the path of the compressed nerve
Numbness or tingling in the extremities supplied by the affected nerve
Muscle weakness — difficulty gripping, walking, or lifting
Pain that worsens with certain movements, sneezing, or coughing
The Gonstead Approach to Disc Problems
Why the Gonstead Method Is Especially Effective for Disc Problems
The Gonstead system was built on a structural engineering model — and disc problems are fundamentally structural issues. By precisely identifying and correcting the vertebral misalignment responsible for uneven disc loading, we address the root cause rather than just decompressing the disc temporarily.
Structural X-Ray Analysis
We analyze disc height, vertebral alignment, and joint relationships from weight-bearing X-rays — giving us a precise map of which segments need correction and in what direction.
Nerve Involvement Assessment
Thermal scanning and EMG analysis help us identify which nerve roots are irritated, correlating with your reported symptoms to confirm our clinical picture before treatment begins.
Drug-Free, Conservative Care
We believe in exhausting conservative care before considering surgical options. Most disc patients respond positively to Gonstead care and avoid invasive procedures entirely.
Common Questions
Disc Herniation FAQs
Is it safe to get a chiropractic adjustment with a herniated disc?
Yes, in most cases — but technique and precision matter enormously. The Gonstead system uses specific, controlled adjustments that are safe for disc conditions. We complete a thorough examination including X-rays before making any adjustment, and we tailor our approach to your specific disc pathology.
Can a herniated disc heal on its own?
Disc herniations can improve over time, but without correcting the underlying vertebral misalignment that caused uneven disc loading, the same forces that herniated the disc remain present. This is why many people experience recurring disc problems. Correcting spinal mechanics gives the disc the best environment to heal and helps prevent re-injury.
My MRI shows a disc herniation — should I still see a chiropractor before surgery?
Absolutely — we strongly encourage a chiropractic evaluation before committing to surgery. Many patients with MRI-confirmed herniations experience significant improvement with Gonstead care. We'll be upfront with you if your case requires a different specialist.
